The EJ10 Jordan Honda powerboat, named after Jordan's new high intensity energy drink, had a thrilling start to its weekend of racing at Teignmouth in Devon.
Celebrity driver Channel 4 "Driven" presenter, Mike Brewer, who drove the boat for the Jordan team, suffered a shunt at the start of Saturday’s race, more akin to Formula One than powerboating, but enough to end their participation for the day.
"We were up in fourth at the first mark, minding our own business, when a boat behind us hit a wave wake and leapt into the air. It landed on our bow and submerged us and when we came up our steering was broken. The annoying thing is they were able to finish the race even with a hole in the side, but we had to be towed back to shore. I was gutted and am looking forward to revenge tomorrow!" said Mike. "Perhaps the drivers of the boat that hit us weren't concentrating - they should have been drinking some EJ10!"
The winning boat of the 17 competitors was Inmarsat sponsored H-4, driven by Miles Dobson and Steve Fearn, the 1999 Honda Formula 4-stroke series champions. It was their first race win and they celebrated by cracking open two bottles of EJ10 as they crossed the finish line.
Having escaped the endurance test of Saturday's 10 lap course, Mike and the Jordan team were fresh and raring to go for Sunday’s race and took the EJ10 Jordan Honda to fourth place in only its second powerboat race.
This time Mike had planned a cunning strategy to guide the boat to the finish. "Our strategy at the start was to keep wide of everyone else into the first buoy, which is where we were taken out by another boat in the first race. Then we planned to settle into the race and overtake the field one by one," said Mike.
"We actually came out of the first buoy tenth then through sheer guts, determination and some brilliant close racing we picked off the boats ahead of us one by one. There were a couple of hairy moments: at one stage we lost the ballast at the front of the boat and it was really rattling around so we considered retiring. And then H-9, the boat that smacked into us yesterday, slapped into the side of us again - they obviously didn't take my advice to drink some EJ10 before the race!"
Mike and his navigator Danny Armon persevered and proudly finished fourth. The race organisers decided this morning to shorten the race course due to windy weather and rough seas and it ended after eight laps just as the EJ10 began to catch third place. "If the race had run its scheduled distance, we would have finished on the podium," added Mike.
The EJ10 will be raced again by a celebrity at the next Honda Formula 4-stroke race in Sables D'Olonnes, France on the 26th May.
