5th May - Young German Touring Car driver to test for Jordan.

The Jordan team is upholding its reputation for promoting young talent with the invitation of a 22-year-old German to test one of its cars later this year.

Reports in Autosport say the Opel DTM racer Timo Scheider has received an invitation to test a Jordan-Honda EJ11 at the end of this season.

The 22-year-old from Braubach is managed by Willi Weber, who also looks after the careers of Michael and Ralf Schumacher. Scheider is hoping the run will give his profile a boost and increase his chances of returning to single-seaters after a couple of seasons in the German tin-top series.

“Naturally I’m looking forward to my first Formula 1 test,” said Scheider. “I am very glad that Jordan is giving me this possibility, because Formula 1 was and still is my target. But, for now, I am going to concentrate on the DTM. Opel gives me the possibility to develop myself with a high-powered racing car and in a professional environment.”

Opel’s motorsport chief, Volker Strycek, believes Scheider can move on to greater things: “Timo is characterised by talent, ambition, professionalism and a certain coolness – something which young drivers have.”

Scheider graduated to the DTM, Germany’s most popular touring car series, after three years of contesting his country’s Formula 3 championship with Opel-powered machinery. He was the first Opel driver across the finishing line in the DTM season-opener at Hockenheim last month.

Past and present Formula One stars have driven in the German and Italian touring Car series including Nicola Larini, Alessandro Nannini, Alexander Wurz, and Giancarlo Fisichella.
