Finland's Kimi Raikkonen emerged unscathed after a heavy crash in testing at Silverstone on Wednesday. The Sauber driver took evasive action to avoid the slowing Jordan of Ricardo Zonta but put a wheel on the wet grass causing him to lose control of the Sauber C20.
At 11:35am Raikkonen crashed on his first flying-lap of a practice qualifying run. With new tyres and a light fuel load he came across a slow moving Ricardo Zonta - the Jordan unexpectedly moved over and Kimi swerved, spun, and lightly hit the barriers. There was minor damage to the right-rear and right front tyres, and the car was taken back to the garage for repair. The session was soon restarted as three Sauber team members went towards Race Control, clearly unhappy with the behaviour of the Jordan.
However, Zonta made sure he apologised to the young Finn at the first opportunity and the situation was diffused. "Ricardo came after the incident to apologise," said Raikkonen, "and he explained that he was not sure on which side of the track I would be and he hesitated as he saw me come in his mirrors. It was clearly a misunderstanding between us and the main thing is that I am not hurt. These things happen sometimes."
