13th May - A performance that just is not good enough.

Well, the weather was nice !
Another bad weekend for the Jordan Honda team ended when neither Jarno Trulli or Heinz-Harald managed to make it to the finishing line. In a race with heavy attrition, both would have been in points scoring positions if they had made it to the flag, but it was not the team’s weekend.

Jarno had a good start and was on for a good points finish until the back end of his EJ11 caught fire after just 31 laps. “After a good start and a trouble free first part of the race, I was struggling over five or six laps with the rear of the car. The next thing I knew, the car stopped at Rascasse with flames coming out of the back. I’m not sure what the cause was but it seems to have been a hydraulic problem, with the car losing pressure over those laps, which explains why the handling became difficult. Until then, the car felt very good and I was not really pushing too hard as I was trying to save the tyres. Monte Carlo is clearly not a circuit where things go well for me.”

Having started from 13th, Heinz-Harald was making steady progress through the field until he came in contact with the Armco in the tunnel on lap 50. “I chose a manual start as that was the safer option, and I got off the line without any incidents. Although I couldn’t overtake anyone, I was having a consistent and solid race and the car’s handling and balance felt very good. I don’t know exactly what happened on the straight down to the chicane. From the apex of the tunnel I experienced understeer and then the car inexplicably steered to the left, hitting the Armco on the exit and sliding right down it to the chicane. The impact was quite hard and I hit my head. Starting from thirteenth position on the grid was clearly unlucky for me today.”

To score points, you have to finish as Trevor Foster, Jordan’s Managing Director pointed out. “As today’s result shows, it was very easy to score points if you could make it to the end, which unfortunately, we were unable to do. Until we get the cars back and analyse the data, we can’t be sure exactly what happened with either car. Heinz obviously hit the barrier, but we have yet to find the cause. It looked like Jarno had some kind of lubricant fire – possibly hydraulic fluid or engine oil.”

“This has sadly not been a good weekend for Jordan,” Eddie Jordan added. “We must put Austria and Monaco behind us and return to our point-scoring form of the first five races this season.”
