Jarno Trulli finished 8th and Heinz-Harald Frentzen 13th in a disappointing qualifying session for Jordan Honda, with neither driver able to complete a clear final run when the track was at its best.
Jarno was disappointed despite qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix in eighth, last year he started from the front row and would have welcomed a repeat performance. On his last run Trulli was blocked by a slow moving Ferrari in the tunnel, however he is still confident of a good result in the unpredictable Monte Carlo race.
“It was a very tough qualifying session as I expected, and I’m disappointed, particularly as we seemed competitive during morning practice," commented Jarno. "Unfortunately, my last timed run was hindered as I was blocked by a slow Ferrari on the driving line in the tunnel, which I found very frustrating since in the drivers’ briefing it was agreed that cars going slowly should stop before the tunnel to allow drivers on their flying lap to pass.
The car does not seem to be that well balanced with the tyres that we have for this weekend. I had a problem with lack of grip in the low speed corners and the car seems to be quite nervous, so we have some work to do for tomorrow but anything is possible in the race, especially at this circuit.”
Meanwhile, Heinz-Harald Frentzen was in determined mood to make up for finishing a below-par 13th in qualifying in which he span out at one point.
Frentzen was over three tenths of a second up on this previous first sector time during his final lap when he spun.
"I spent most of qualifying setting up the car with new tyres, as I lost the time to do this during morning practice due to a hydraulic problem," said Heinz-Harald. "Everything was going well in qualifying until my last timed run, when I lost the rear and spun on the corner before the tunnel, which is unfortunate as my first sector time was very good. I had a problem with understeer on the low speed corners which we need to improve. I think it will be a hard race tomorrow, starting from my disappointing position on the grid.”
“It’s an unfortunate result for the team, particularly as neither Heinz nor Jarno had a clear final timed run," said Trevor Foster, Jordan’s Managing Director. "One of the problems with this circuit is that your grid position is punished if you don’t complete all your timed runs. Jarno was blocked by a Ferrari which cost him a few vital tenths, and Heinz lost the rear of the car on braking before the tunnel. Both EJ11 cars are generally well balanced, but it’s difficult to get the perfect balance on this circuit. We should have been higher up on the grid, but missed our best opportunities.”
