Jordan driver, Heinz-Harald Frentzen has been busy testing with the team in Valencia for the past two days and during that time they have practiced starts with their problematic launch control.
After scoring points in 3 of the first 4 races, Heinz has now gone 3 with no points at all, and major problems even getting off the grid in the last two.
Although hid failure in Austria was gearbox related, teammate Jarno Trulli experienced launch control problems that eventually culminated in his disqualification from the race.
As Frentzen remarked in Valencia where his currently testing, he did more mileage in the first day of the Spanish session than he had done in the last three races, and as they continue to work on the preparations for round seven in Monaco, there are serious thoughts on turning the launch control off for this event. Starting manually may be the way to go as the risk of losing another race due to the problems are just too high at this stage of the championship.
He completed many untroubled laps on Day 2 at Valencia and Heinz joked that he thought he was being made to complete the distance of the Spanish and Austrian Grands Prix as he hadn't managed it on race day. "I did 93 laps today – I almost thought I had to repeat the combined distances of Barcelona and Spielberg!"
The preparation work for the next race is going well. "The narrow Valencia track is a perfect preparation for Monaco and we did plenty of work with the set-up. We've also emphasised work with the tyres and additionally we've been looking after starts. What can I say, they worked perfectly, as at all the previous tests."
But the team have to decide whether to take a risk at the start. "We've only had twice a problem with the Launch-Control, in Barcelona and in Spielberg. Currently we're discussing if it might make sense to start at Monaco with the traditional procedure as we always did. It really might make not much sense to risk an entire race for the sake of gaining a few seconds at the start."
