Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Ricardo Zonta yesterday continued with the second day of a four-day test in Valencia in very hot conditions, reaching a high temperature of thirty degrees.
Frentzen completed another 82 trouble free laps to finish a productive day of testing with the second fastest lap time of 1:14.20. He concentrated on car set-up for Monaco and further tyre testing for Bridgestone.
Zonta had a problematic morning due to a gearbox failure that ended his session after a few laps. The team was able to make the repairs and get him out in the afternoon when he achieved a best lap time of 1:15.02, placing him fourth. He concentrated on an evaluation of new aerodynamic parts.
The team will be worried about the increasing regularity with which the gearbox seems to be packing in. Most of the reliability issues in 2000 stemmed from the gearbox and they have worked hard to sort the problems in the meantime, but some would seem to remain.
Although Frentzen was scheduled to finish testing on Wednesday, he will now continue to drive on Thursday with team-mate Jarno Trulli joining. Zonta will then take over from Frentzen for the final day on Friday.
